The Shimba hills are a dissected plateau that ascends steeply from the Coastal plains, and is 30km south west of Momabasa and just south of Kwale town. The surrounding escarpment rises form around 120m to 300m across the bulk of the plateau.
Shimba Hills was gazetted as a National forest in 1903 but the Reserve was later expanded to include the surrounding savanna,
The area has diverse but scenic landscapes ranging from hills to waterfalls to coastal rainforest.
