Semi-tame Impala at Kisumu Sactuary home for captured problem animals.
The Sactuary is a 0.6 Square Km marsh, grassland and forest was created to provide a home for small herds of Impala. It has also developed to be a home for captured problem animals. It also provides grazing for Hippos and habitat for various small mammals and a variety of birds & reptiles.
It also host two leopards, one spotted hyena, two Olive Baboons and several Vervet Monkeys held in captivity. There are sightings of the reclusive acutely threatened Saitunga.
The Pitiful herd of Impala that roamed the town were among the only remaining wildlife by the 1980s hence the establishment of the sanctuary.
Before the East Africa Railways reached Kisumu in the early 1900s the area is presumed to have been very rich in Wildlife. These have reduced due to hunting, human settlement and agriculture which have hurt the ecosystem.
Major Attractions Impala, Hyena, Jackal, Hippo, Ostrich, Vervet Monkey Caged Leopards and Baboon. Also over 115 species of birds. Access Roads: Kisumu is located 355km north of Nairobi and the sactuary is 3km from Kisumu City near Hippo Point. Air:There are regular flights from Nairobi taking around an hour.
