Endemic Birds: Kakamega Blue Headed Bee Eater

This reserve was established to protect Kenya's only mid-altitude tropical rainforest as it has many indigenous tree species found nowhere else in the country.

The forest is an important water catchment area as it lies in the Lake Victoria Basin, North of Kisumu and West of the Nandi Escarpent.

The forest covers over 240 square km and has been gazetted since 1930 as a trust forest and the Kisere Forest is adjacent to it.

The area has heavy rainfall especially between the months of April and November with a short dry spell from December to March. Rain falls mostly in the afternoon and early evening accompanied with heavy thunderstorm. The reserve can be visited all year round.
